MEETING MINUTES OF
October 10, 2008
Goal Setting
Those present gathered for lunch at 12:00. Commissioner Oswald called the meeting of the Dubuque
Human Rights Commission to order at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Holiday Inn
Dubuque.

By group consensus, the two goals from last year related to increasing visibility in the community and
educating the community will be continued, and a third goal related to empowering protected classes will
be added. The group expressed interest in pursuing the following:

Submitting human rights related information to City News no less than four times in the next
twelve months.
?
Identify community organizations to develop a relationship with and invite to HRC meetings for
sharing of information.
?
Continuing a relationship with the Multicultural Family Center and considering holding occasional
meetings there or at other appropriate places in the community.
?
Develop additional information to be placed on the Human Rights web page.
?
Offer at least twelve speakers’ bureau presentations.
?
Present informational programs to at least six organizations in the next twelve months.
?
Developing a process for tracking, on a monthly basis, news articles written and presentations
conducted by commissioners.
?
Inviting the Human Rights groups at the local colleges to be a non-voting part of the commission.
?
Developing a process for staff to refer discrimination concerns to a commissioner advocate in
cases where there is no legal remedy.
?
Developing a process to review progress on goals every three months.
