Communication_Amanda BenckhuysenCity Council of Dubuque 1300 Main St. Dubuque, IA 52001 November 25, 2008 To the City Council: As members of the community that live on and nearby Rockdale Road, we are requesting that the city council consider at their next meeting our petition for a sidewalk along Rockdale. The amount and speed of the motorized traffic is increasing on this road as is the number of families who walk and bike this route to get to schools and parks off of S. Grandview Avenue. Without a sidewalk creating sage passage along this road, it is only a matter of time before a serious accident involving a pedestrian happens. As such, we ask that the City Council consider this matter in light of its commitment and work in making Dubuque a safe place for its residents, and particularly for families to live. Sincerely, Amanda W. Benckhuysen 1324 Tomahawk Drive Dubuque, IA 52003 a.benckhuysen@mchsi.com 563-557-7983 RECEIVED 08 NOV 25 PM 3:50 City Clerk's Office Dubuque, IA September 26, 2008 Petition for Sidewalk Installation We, the undersigned, hereby petition the City Council of the City of Dubuque to install a sidewalk along Rockdale Road from Fox Drive to South Grandview Avenue. We support this request with the following reasons: 1. Dubuque has long been committed to the goal of improving pedestrian safety. An integral step toward achieving that goal is to construct sidewalks in the City where they are missing. Because Rockdale Road also functions as an on-ramp to Hwys. 151/52, motorized vehicles often travel quite fast, making this particular stretch of Rockdale very dangerous to walk or bike. A sidewalk would greatly enhance pedestrian safety for residents who live on Rockdale and streets adjoining Rockdale Road. 2. The Iowa Department of Transportation is administering a new federally funded program to help get more Iowa children bicycling and walking to and from school safely. It is possible that the City of Dubuque could apply for and be granted State funding for this endeavor through the SRTS grant program. Putting in this "missing sidewalk" would create a "Safe Route to School" and get more children bicycling and walking to and from Bryant Elementary, Washington Middle and St. Columbkille Elementary Schools. Currently, our children can safely walk and bike along South Grandview Avenue to school but they can not get to South Grandview Avenue safely. Even though there is a sidewalk along Tomahawk Drive, there is no side walk attaching Tomahawk Drive to South Grandview Avenue and no cross walk to help children safely cross the street. 3. Dubuque has worked hard at making itself an All American City with excellent parks for children and families. Murphy Park is very close by and children and families from Tomahawk Drive and Fox Drive could bike or walk to this beautiful park if a sidewalk was installed. At this time, it is far too dangerous even to walk along Rockdale Road to the park. A sidewalk would greatly increase pedestrian safety and would thereby enhance the quality of life of those living along and just off of Rockdale Road. We request that the City Council take this petition request under consideration at its earliest opportunity and the we be informed as to when it is scheduled for formal action so that we may appear in person to support this request, if we so choose. October 25, 2008 Petition for Sidewalk Installation We, the undersigned, hereby petition the City Council of the City of Dubuque to install a sidewalk along the west side of Rockdale Road from Fox Drive to South Grandview Avenue. We support this request with the following reasons: 1. Dubuque has long been committed to the goal of improving pedestrian safety. An integral step toward achieving that goal is to construct sidewalks in the City where they are missing. Safety is a particular concern on Rockdale Road.
