Brede House Name of Property 115 Alpine Address Dubuque County Dubuque City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: c.1904, late Queen Anne style, unusual shallow pavilion comprises left-hand two-thirds of fayade, remainder has modillions beneath the eaves (these continue around the south front and define a recessed tower like form). The gable and wing feature pedimented fronts and the upper portion of the main gable front is infilled. Physical Description: broad two-story gable front with north-facing shallow side wing (T-form). Stone foundation. L-shaped core measures 29' deep by 26' in width, front pavilion 15x1, 16x2 side wing right, 2x15 left. Two rear additions and twin porches. Alterations: resided with asbestos siding, round porch columns likely c.1915 but porch roof original, iron porch railing is of recent vintage, house duplexed with front second entry, chimney top reduced and rebuilt. Permits note 1936, 1957 and 1996 re-roofings, garage roof in 1957. Landscaping/Setting: Shallow terrace setting. Garage at back of lot driveway to south. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: John F. and Helen E. Brede House, first listed in directories 1904-05 as 431 Alpine. They previously lived at 468 Alpine 1901-03. Building History: John Brede lived here as late as 1921. He was secretary-treasurer of Peasley Brede Co. in 1902 and was in charge of city sales for the John 1. Hancock Co. as of 1901. Brede owned the property when it was sewered and the sewer tap dates to April 7, 1904. 9.
