7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Street Historic District. StyleNear: c.1907-08, Shingle style,
gambrel front and molded wood shingle cladding, Colonial revival window detailing with diamond lights
in attic level upper sash, wrap-around offset porch.
Physical Description: Broad T-shaped plan, gable-capped pavilion (15x1) fills left portion of fayade,
gables are pedimented (upper portion of main gable is infilled), centered attic light is a reversed
Palladian form, stone foundation. Extreme core dimensions 42 in depth by 32 width.
Alterations: Very well preserved. Permits note re-proofing in 1937, 1995, garage re-roofings in 1941
and 1962, front porch steps replacement in 1983.
Landscaping/Setting: Carriage house at rear southeast corner, fronts south. House fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Judge John D. and Maude Dennison were the first directory listed residents in
1908-15 (the address was 467 Alpine in 1908). He was assistant county attorney as of 1909. He
became a district Judge in Des Moines and left the city. Dr. John B. Heles purchased the property. Dr.
John B. Heles is the first directory listed owner of 434 Alpine in 1916-17. Clara Heles given as original
owners by Assessor as of 1955 and still lived here through 1969. Dr. Heles help started Medical
Associates Clinic.
Building History: Leathers and Trewin owned the property when it was sewered and the sewer tap
dates to January 18, 1908. Ann M. Murphy present owner has owned it since 1969.
