7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1899-1900 (site sheet correction
to 1921, Assessor says 1915-20), Shingle/late Queen Anne, shingle style represented by large rounded
bay and the associated curved outside corner, the concentric shingle pattern on the front dormer,
battered corners on the front dormer, and the recessed twin-columned end gable openings. The
Queen Anne is represented by the overall asymmetry, the recessed second floor corner porch
(northeast corner) and the mixed cladding materials. The eaves are broadly projecting. There is a
single-story three sided bay on the south sidewall.
Designer/Builder: Guilbert & Littlefield, architects.
Physical Description: Two-story side gable core with rounded large bay with turret roof, partial width
shed roof front porch is in the northeast front corner. Core measures 42x34. Attached garage on rear
right of plan. Stone foundation.
Alterations: The porch dates to 1962, there is a two-story 1959 addition on the southwest corner.
Permits note re-roofings in 1961, 1981, 1994, open porch construction in 1962 ($4,500).
Landscaping/Setting: The driveway is north of the house.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Dr. John A. and Jennie Meshinger were the first listed residents of 339 Alpine
in 1901. He was a dentist. The doctor was reported as having plans prepared for this house in mid-
1899 (Telegraph, May 28, 1899).
Building History: John A. Messinger house, 1918-21. No sewer data found.
