7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1854/56, 1900-01, Italianate
modified as Colonial Revival, latter represented by full-width single-story front porch, centered gable
roof portico with broken pediment, and a matching pediment that interrupts the front cornice line, the
latter is set atop paired engaged columns and a porch-top balcony with half-round balustrade. The
Italianate style is embodied in the belvedere, overall massing, fenestration and paired brackets set
beneath the eaves lines.
Physical Description: Broad two-story near square 50x40 plan with hip roof and belvedere, centered
two-story bay to north, two-story porch extension to southwest, stone foundation and brick exterior.
Front porch measures 7x13 and is set between two 9x13 bays. Stone foundation.
Alterations: Stylistic updating c.1910. Permits note adding an "air structure" above the tennis court in
1920 ($8,000), roofing the garage with cedar shingles in 1983, front porch repair in 1989. Note that
1933 photo shows no porch, dormers on eavesline or the present clerestory.
Landscaping/Setting: Level corner lot, house orients to the east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Warner Louis/Lewis House.
Building History: Robert S. Harris resided on the northwest corner of West 3rd and Alpine as of 1868.
His widow Mrs. Phoebe H. Harris was here as of1886. J. A. Aiman house, 1899, no listing 1901, C. E.
Wales here 1902. John 1. Adams house, 1918-21, present on 1872 birds eye view. The sewer tap
dates to May 10,1911.
House built in 1857, builder unknown. Property purchased from James Langworthy in 1847. Sold to
Thomas Nairn 1849. Thomas Nairn, head clerk of the Surveyor General's office, resided on 5th
between Alpine and Spring as of 1857, not likely this house. He is listed at 10th & Iowa as of 1858
however.
Sold to Warner Louis, General in the U.S. Army in 1856. House built by Warner Louis in 1857.
General Grant may have visited house to play cards. House purchased by Scribe (Robert S.) Harris
1863. Carriage House 1867. Harris was River Boat Engineer. Brother of Daniel Smith Harris. Phebe
Harris died 1892. Charles Wales buys home 1892. 1904 house purchased by John 1. Adams from
Charles Wales.
House remodeled in 1905? Back two porches enclosed 1925? House purchased by Fred Bissell in
1943. Mrs. Adams died in 1943. House has been in the Bissell family since 1943 to the Present. Now
owned by John Bissell (Owner information).
