7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1875, Italianate, broad and
broadly projecting eaves, unusual gabled pediment that interrupts front cornice line (mirrors similar
commercial plans in downtown, same date), lunette attic light, right-hand entry with transom and
sidelights.
Physical Description: Two-story brick rectangular (34x30) plan, single-story full-width front porch (8x26),
rear slightly lower brick extension (17x28, offset 6 feet) that extends beyond sides of core plan, stone
foundation and water table, flush-set stone lintels, projecting plain stone sills. Porch has carved square
flared columns and decorative bargeboard, possibly original or of early date. Eight room plan.
Alterations: Very well preserved. Permits note a re-roofing in 1998, rear porch repair in 1965, and a
deck in 1990.
Landscaping/Setting: Level site, house orients east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: Original address 257 Alpine. J. F. Merry, 1899, Nellie Adams house, 1918-21. 1889
birds eye appears to show with hip roof. Mary A. Pollock owned the parcel when it was sewered, the
tap dates to August 29, 1911. Dubuque Womens' Club owns 1955. Bought from Adams family.
