7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1909, Tudor
Revival/Mission/Craftsman, Tudor reflected in the half timbering, art glass; Mission style in the bay and
solarium, Mission in the stucco, massing and exposed rafter tails and bay windows.
Physical Description: Two-story side gable rectangular 33x42 core plan with south centered single-story
4x16 bay and two-story north end 22x10 solarium wing, matching ground level cantilevered 1.5'x10
bays with shed roof caps flank a centered entry with gable roof entry hood. A broad centered gable
roof dormer features half-timbering with a rounded base that traces a four-light art glass rounded
window set. Half-timbering similarly underscores the entry hood below. Stucco exterior. There is a
rear wing in the northeast corner. A rear wing (22x17) and patio fill the back of the plan. There is a
basement garage beneath the patio.
Alterations: Solarium, originally open on both levels has been built in. Permits note re-roofings in 1961
and 1986, repairing "sto" in 1943, adding a basement garage in 1971 ($4,000), enclosing the screen
porch in 1985 ($6,000).
Landscaping/Setting: Level corner location, building fronts west. Stone retaining wall along south side,
wraps around a central drive, concrete wall on west front, garage under patio.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Harker B. Spensley built a "fine home cement construction, West 4th and
Alpine" in 1909 (Journal, January 2, 1910).
Building History: Subsequent owners were Dr. Albert J. Entringer, J. Bruce McDonald, and Ed and Jane
Monaghan (1992+). The house was featured in the 2002 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour. The
sewer tap dates to May 9, 1905.
