7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1875, Italianate with Colonial
Revival front porch, the Italianate is embodied in the belvedere, hip roof, overall massing and paired
brackets. Colonial Revival porch dates to c.1910, is full-width with centered projecting pedimented
entry, and triple square-cut post clusters support the porch. The porch has a dark rusticated stone
base and piers.
Physical Description: Two-story near square painted brick plan (45x40) with hip roof, low-profile
belvedere, two end chimneys on each sidewall, centered north side bay (8x5), centered rear bay and
porch/garage in southwest corner. There is a shed roof dormer set between the chimneys on the north
side. Standing seam metal roof and stone foundation. Rear single story wing (20x25), front porch
measures 10x38.
Alterations: The photo by Root shows a more traditional Italianate style belvedere. Porch as noted.
Permits note re-roofings in 1963 and the porch in 1942, conversion to a two-family unit in 1956 ($700),
building a frame garage in 1967 (Assessor says 1957) ($900), repairing the rear porch in 1963 ($700).
Landscaping/Setting: Slightly raised site, driveway to south of house. Garage in northwest corner with
driveway to east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: D. N. Cooley (1825- ) was a lawyer and educator who came to Dubuque in
1854 and partnered with Austin Adams and Ben Samuels, and after 1855 with William B. Allison.
Adams left the firm and it was titled Samuels, Cooley & Allison. This premier law firm next added C. H.
Eighmey as a partner. Cooley was appointed Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1866 by President
Andrew Johnson. He served in that capacity for one year and then practiced law in Washington, D.C.
for a decade before returning to Dubuque. He was president and principal owner of the First National
Bank. He funded a professor's chair at Grinnell College and otherwise financially supported it (Herald,
December 20, 1885).
Building History: might be on 1889 birds eye but not clear, John W. Nairn here at 71 Alpine 1890-99,
John J. and Mrs. Marie L. McCarthy here 1902-09 (John deceased by 1906), Alonzo D. Parker house,
1915-21. Mary Nairn owned the parcel when it was sewered, the tap dates to c.1911.
