7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: 1845, pre-1918, Colonial
Revival/Colonial Revival, rounded entry porch with columns, basic symmetry and massing.
Physical Description: Two-story rectangular plan with brick veneer, hip roof, jack arches and stone
keystones, casement windows, brick foundation, front terrace with metal balustrade.
Alterations: There is an attached large L-plan single story garage wing of recent date on the northwest
corner.
Landscaping/Setting: Level site. Garage fronts south, stone retaining wall on south and east
boundaries, gate and steps east of house. The original house was addressed to Langworthy.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: This was the Lucius Langworthy house that was remodeled by Titus Schmid,
who owned the house as of September 1946. It dated to c.1845 (uncited newspaper clipping, date
stamped September 15, 1946, Historic Homes File F-2, Center For Dubuque History). The 1858-59

directory places Lucius Langworthy here, on 3 between Hill and Alpine streets.
Building History: 485 Hill lists L. H. Langworthy 1899, vacant 1918, Charles and Edith Flanders here
1921 (205 Hill). He was the manager for the Western Grocery Co. V. A. Langworthy owned the parcel
when it was sewered.
Incidentally, the historic china which was made for this house and inscribed with the name of Lucius’s
wife Valeria is featured at the Ham House Museum (Susan Campbell).
