Thill House Dubuque Name of Property County 1110 Langworthy Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: 1915 (owner, also note etched basement tile with 1913), Craftsman/ Colonial Revival style, shallow “U” shaped façade with matching end upper level orioles, a centered open porch atop the main porch, and an unusual porch projection that projects a three-sided bay from its center. Oriole and dormer windows have vertical divide set beneath a shallow transom with diamond lights (see 1090 Langworthy). Dormer wall corners are battered. Designer/Builder: Said to have been modeled after a Dyersville house, present owners have located nd same on 2 Avenue in Dyersville). Physical Description: Rectangular plan (36x32) with hip roof, broad centered front dormer, diamond pattern upper sash. Shingle exterior. Four bay windows at or near endwall corners. Front bay 2’6” x 16, full-width front porch 9’6” x 32. Stone foundation. Unpainted quarter-sawn oak throughout the interior and one bedroom features birdseye maple woodwork. Alterations: The porch has been screened in. Permits note re-roofings in 1945, 1980, 1997, and building a garage in 1971. Assessor notes November 16, 1971 permit for garage addition, 16x24, notes foundation only complete as of December 1971. The house was generally repaired in 1997 (new wiring, new roof, new first floor laundry and bathroom, kitchen improvements). Porch no longer screened in. Landscaping/Setting: driveway to east, garage in east center of parcel. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Fred F.and Mabelle A. Thill were the first listed residents in 1915 (as 272 Langworthy). He was the president of the Standard Supply co. Current owners credit parents of William F. Thill with building the house. William Thill lived here until 1997. Mabelle A. Carroll listed by Assessor as original owner, her estate owned it as of 1966. Building History: David D. Howe built three houses on Langworthy in 1915: (1) a single-story frame, $2,500, 451 Langworthy, (2) single story, $2,000, and (3) a frame house for $2,000, likely one story as well (Telegraph-Herald, December 26, 1915). The sewer tap is dated October 24, 1913. William F. Thill owned in 1971 when garage was expanded. 9. Major Bibliographical References: Information provided by current owner Deb Fordice.
