7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: c.1915, Craftsman style.
Designer/Builder: Christian Arthur Voelker built the house.
Physical Description: This is a broad two-story gable front square plan (30x26) with a full-width flat roof
front porch (7x25). The foundation is concrete and the porch base and piers are of rusticated concrete
block (“Voelker stone”). Porch columns are sharply tapered. The house is clad with narrow clapboard.
The gable front is pedimented and shingled. Twin shallow orioles (1’6”x10) infill the second floor front.
There is a wood water table.
Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1939, 1996, re-siding in 1979, wood soffit replacement in 1987.
Landscaping/Setting: Level site, north fronting orientation.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: John C. and Louisa Boleyn first listed as residents, 1918-21+.
This was one of three Christian Arthur Voelker built houses, including 1011, 1025 and 1033.
Building History: Assessor gives William Boleyn as the original owner who sold the house to Warren
and Sonja Salveson in 1970. Jean A. Schmitz owned and restored the house beginning in 2000, and
added an Anamosa stone retaining wall and driveway, and announced plans in 2002 to add a rear
porch (2002 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour). The Edward Langworthy Estate owned the parcel
when it was sewered, the tap dates to 1910, 1917.
Jean A. Schmitz owned and restored the house beginning in 2000, and added an Anamosa stone
retaining wall and driveway, and announced plans in 2002 to add a rear porch (2002 Old House
Enthusiasts House Tour).
