7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: 1916 (Assessor) Craftsman
style
Designer/Builder: Chris A. Voelker builder.
Physical Description: Two-story side gable square plan (28x30) with full-height east solarium wing
(14x10). This is a good experimental concrete block design with the latter material being used on the
ground floor and stuccoed frame above. There is an offset broad pavilion (1’6”x3) on the façade with
concrete block finials and an intervening shed roof cap. The right-hand entry has a gable roof porch
and concrete steps. The wing has concrete block corner columns with window and stucco infills.
Rafters are exposed on the broadly overhanging eaves and there is a tall and narrow gable roof
centered dormer with a Pavillion-like window set. Windows have Craftsman style upper sash. The
basement is raised. There is a single-story L-shaped rear concrete block porch 7x10 core.
Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1944, 1974, 1996.
Landscaping/Setting: Raised terrace site.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Otto F. and Louise B. Hess were the first listed residents here as of 1918. He
was employed by the CM& St. Paul Railroad.
Building History: Mary Astor, widow of Charles G. Astor, lived here in 1921. She then worked for the S.
S. Kresgee Co. The Edward Langworthy Estate owned the parcel when it was sewered, the tap dates
to November 16, 1920. Kathleen M. Schrup owns 1940-1955+.
