7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: c.1915/1920, Colonial Revival,
this is a very experimental rusticated concrete block design with curvilinear eavesline, unusual cast
concrete combination lintels and attached spring stones, and a remarkable frame porch infill.
Physical Description: The two-story core plan has a rectangular footprint (30x30 with recessed 7x12
front corner porch) and a hip roof. The foundation of cast concrete is exposed on the east end. The
exterior is of rusticated concrete block. Plain faced beltcoureses trace the sill and lintel levels on each
floor. Ground level windows have unusual semi-circular lintels. The façade balances a shallow three-
sided bay with a recessed porch and enclosed porch above it. The entry has a matching semi-circular
arch and it is flanked by square cut frame pillars which are supported by concrete block outcroppings.
Rear porch measures 9x9.
Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1948, 1978, 1995.
Landscaping/Setting: The lot is uneven, being higher towards the west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Joseph W. and Victoria Meyer were the first listed residents, 1921. He was a
cashier for the Dubuque National Bank. This is one of three Chris Voelker built houses, including 1011,
1025 and 1033.
Building History: The Edward Langworthy Estate owned the parcel when it was sewered, the tap dates
to 1910, 1917.
The house remained in the Boleyn Family as a home for John’s Widow and adult son for years, and
then, still owned by Boleyns became a rental property. In the 1960’s and early 1970’s it was owned
briefly by several families. It was purchased in summer 1973 by Peter and Barbara Schenck who have
lived here with their family ever since. Minor changes were made in the 70’s to windows in the attic
(from owner).
