Sherling House Dubuque Name of Property County 1087 Melrose Terrace Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: 1919-20 (Assessor), Foursquare type, Craftsman style, latter embodied in the paneled porch pillars, and upper window sash. Physical Description: This is a two-story hip roof square plan (30x28) with front and side hip roof broad dormers. There is a full-width front porch with elaborate and large paneled pillars. A special feature is the use of corner window bands on the front upper level. Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1932, 1979, 1995, the soffits were re-sided in 1980, and wood steps replaced with concrete stoop in 1996. Landscaping/Setting: Site drops away to the southwest, the garage and drive are to the west and south. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Louis C. and Mabelle E. Sherling were the first listed residents here 1921. He was secretary for the Dubuque Mattress Co. Building History: The Edward Langworthy Estate owned the parcel when it was sewered. F. G. and Jane Leonard, own 1951-67, give age as 1919 to Assessor. 9.
