7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1920-21, Tudor Revival house,
embodied in the catslide roof, ornate stone entryway, casement windows with transoms.
Physical Description: This is a two-story L-plan (27x41 with 4x17 front wing) with side gable roof, front
and west end subornated gabled wings. The exterior is brick veneer, the foundation is of stone. There
is a corner porch in the northwest corner (10x7) and a 20x10 extension behind that porch. There is a
20x11 east wing. Half-timberwork is exposed only on the core gable ends.
Alterations: No permit notes.
Landscaping/Setting: Level site, driveway is to the west of the house, house fronts northward, garage
attached behind house.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Fred W. and Elsie Woodward were the first residents listed here, 1921. He
was president of the Telegraph-Herald Co.
Building History: Fred W. Woodward here 1921, owns through c.1971, no 1918 listing. The house was
pictured in the Telegraph-Herald (November 1, 1931) for its beautiful landscaping. Large urns flanked
the entryway. Mrs. F. W. Woodward occupiedt he house at that time. A barberry hedge bordered the
property, tree species included maples, elms, Blur-spruce, yellow poplar, while shrubs included the
burning bush, weigela, snowball, syringa, lilacs, dogwood, spireas. Five varieties of climbing roses
were noted.
