7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1857/1856Assessor, Octagon.
Designer/Builder: John F. Rague, architect (based it was said on the Washington, D.C. Octagon).
(Shank, p. 134).
Physical Description: Two-story octagon plan with a two-story ornate entry porch on the south front,
and Italianate single-story bays with cast iron balconies in each of the other bays. Stone foundation,
brick wall. All Langworthy house plans had the same basic arrangements, with a parlor across the west
half of the plan, and a sitting room on the east half. This one contained 21 rooms, eight fireplaces (four
down and two up). Each face of octagon is 18' wide, bays are 2'6"x7 each, overall depth and width, 44'
rear wing measures 36' deep, 25' wide, with 11x18 west wing, and 9x10 frame addition in junction of
original and addition. Assessor card 1955 notes exclusion of "rear dwelling."
Alterations: Addition, see 320 Alpine, north end addition, separately addressed, contains basement
garage for property. Permits note re-roofings in 1949, 1962, 1968, 1940, 1980 (part), 1982, 1989,
cupola re-roofing in 1981 and 1997, roof repairs in 1958, 1969, 1983, addition 1946 ($2,500), remodel
basement for addition garage space 1931 ($163), erecting attached garage 1946 ($200), fascia, soffit
repair 1983, front porch repair and rear porch re-roof, 1983.
Landscaping/Setting: level site house fronts to the southwest.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Edward and Pauline Reeder Langworthy, is one of two unaltered of four
Langworthy brothers homes (one demolished, Solon Langworthy's house survives immediately south,
home of Lucious Langworthy greatly modified, corner Langworthy and Hill, sister Harriet Langworthy
Massey house demolished). Edward and Pauline Langworthy were married in 1835 and claimed to
have had the first marriage in Iowa. Listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places.
HABS/ HAER Documentation.
Original Owner/Builder: Edward and Pauline Reeder Langworthy, directories list the house as of 1856
(corner 3rd and Alpine). Langworthy is listed here as a realto 1873, as a capitalist, 641 West 3rd in
1883, and again as realtor 1890.
Building History: the current family descendants continue to occupy the house (William Bradley
Chalmers, 5th generation). He followed Edward and Rose Langworthy Chalmers, the fourth generation
(Sunday Des Moines Register, June 23, 1946; "An Historic Octagonal House," n.d., no citation, Historic
Houses File, File F-1, Center For Dubuque History).
Edward Langworthy built a two-story addition to his residence on Alpine at the head of 3rd, 30x24,
$2,750 in 1872 (Herald, Novem-ber 24, 1872). The sewer tap dates October 3, 1922. A second brick
addition was built in 1947 and is separately addressed as 320 Alpine.
