7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: pre-1872, an unusual
combination of two houses, one fronting south, the other with separate porch, fronting west. This is a
two-story gable front brick side hall vernacular plan. The only ltalianate element is a surviving 2/2 front
attic light with rounded arch.
Physical Description: both halves are square plans on raised stone foundations (fully exposed on the
east side). Entrance is on the left, fenestration is symmetrical, openings are broad with flattened
rounded arches (double rowlock brick arches) with wooden sills. There are basement windows that are
vertically aligned and these have wood lintels (unusual). The back unit has a nicely preserved shed
roof rear two-story wing with its clapboard exterior intact. Assessor treats as single building (triplex)
1971, core two-story portion 28x20, left hand side porch 16x9, rear single-story additions 16x14
(center) and 16x12.
Alterations: windows changed to 6/6, concrete steps/stoop and metal railings. Permits note re-roofings
in 1956, 1976, 1980, 1982, 1994, platform built 1952. Shutters and frame addition sided since 1986.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner lot, ground drops abruptly to east and south, rear building is set
lower, garage at northeast corner of lot.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Daniel and Hanora Riordan, City Treasurer, lived at 193 Arlington 1874-99. He
was an Illinois Central railroad clerk (1883) and car inspector (1890). In 1873 he lived on the northeast
corner of Walnut and Prairie and was deputy county treasurer.
Building History: both units clearly visible on 1889 birds eye view. Front unit present on 1872 view.
L. Powers owned the parcel when it was sewered in 1897.
