7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872/1906
Assessor, broad two-story brick vernacular duplex. Italianate bracketed canopy with three brackets
with pendants (unusual).
Physical Description: raised stone foundation with water table, double rowlock brick rounded window
arches (unusual because they wrap around the upper window from each spring stone base).
Symmetrical fenestration with centered/paired single entrances with transoms. Centered nearly full-
width rear gable roof wing and two single story frame attached garages are at the back, set between
the floors, sided. Rear wings are a two-story brick and two-story frame sequence. T-plan core has
28x34 front section and centered 13x35 rear section, rear wing 18x32. Four apartments as of 1971.
Alterations: windows and doors replaced, aluminum sided soffits, concrete stoop and metal railings.
Permits note re-roofings in 1944, 1968 (rear), 1994 (half), 1995 (half), two-family converted to four
family 1936 ($1,100), attached garage re-sided1982, re-roofed 1967.
Landscaping/Setting: ground rises to the south and west, back of lot reached by stone steps along west
side of house. Stone retaining wall in front of house.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Dr. Charles J. Peterson lived at 39 Chestnut 1889-90 (he was a dentist officed
above 955 Main. Charles A. and Alice Noyes, who operated an art store at that address, lived at 41
Chestnut in 1889. Peterson was president of the board of education as of 1889.
Building History: appears on 1872, 1889 birds eye views.
James Wallis owned the parcel when it was sewered in 1891.
