7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889/1886
(Assessor), two-story stepped end gable brick Adams/Federal style duplex.
Physical Description: rectangular plan, chimneys being incorporated into the raised end walls,
symmetrical fenestration, metal lintels and sills, the latter with upper sills and spring stones (same used
on side walls which is unusual), paired centered entries with transoms, raised stone foundation, later-
date frame porches, east half is so far below the west half that the front steps pass through the floor of
the porch. Double decker rear porch. Anchor bolts on side walls. Each half measures 30x20 with
5x19 rear porch, full front porch 16x40.
Alterations: window replacements, porches rebuilt and opened. Permits note a re-roofing in 1992 (half),
porch railings in 1992 on 559, two-car garage in 1940, porch 1977, swimming pool 1997 in 561.
Landscaping/Setting: parcel ground level drops sharply east, driveways flank building, fronts south.
Garage in rear of parcel on Arlington Street.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: J. G. Peterson, a contractor, built a double two-story brick tenement, 38x20
with wing 14x12, for $3,200 on Chestnut, between High and Prairie, in 1870. The narrow length given
best fits this duplex (Herald, December 18, 1870).
J. G. Peterson also built a $5,000 brick dwelling on Chestnut in 1876. Peterson then lived at 82
Arlington so it was not his residence (Herald, December 7, 1876). No address is given but it could
apply to any early brick.
J. H. Riland lived at 73 Chestnut in 1890 and worked for Laflin and Rand Powder Co. Mrs. Ada A.
Riland (his widow) was here in 1899. No listings found for 69 Chestnut.
P. Bissell owned the parcel when it was sewered in 1891.
