7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: post-1889, pre-1909,
two-story brick hip roof, Queen Anne style duplex (bays, pedimented gable roof dormers), Neo
Classical style porch (c.1910).
Physical Description: square plan (51’6”x40) with twin front outside pedimented gable roof dormers that
cap shallow front wings. Single-story three-sided bays (1’6”x15) are centered on the first floor front of
each wing. Entries are paired and centered. Bay bases are clad with narrow clapboard. No transoms
and only the entries have stone lintels with pediments. The second floor windows have no visible lintels
and that level is covered by the cornice frieze. The dormer fronts are shingled in patterns and have
single rounded lights. The porch (8x38) has square pillars and a low profile hip roof with plain cornice.
Raised stone foundation and water table, original front wooden stairs, concrete block porch and base,
new porch.
Alterations: windows replaced, porch as noted, railings replaced. Permits note re-roofings in 1954,
1999, roof repair in 1942, and porch replacement in 1938, all on 574. Alterations 1939 for 576.
Landscaping/Setting: moderate terrace approach with broad concrete stairs, metal railing, excavated
shelf on rising ground (to west), fronts east. Stone wall and stone sidewalls on centered stairs, gate.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: Four four-room apartments as of 1971. A. B. Carlin owned the parcel when it was
sewered in 1891.
