7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889? single-story
T-plan frame Queen Anne style cottage (style embodied in bay, shingle work, door surround, gable
front pendant).
Physical Description: the east half of the T-plan (30x23) is of earlier origin, and has a low set stone
foundation and a frame below grade level. It has a full stuccoed and scored stone foundation. It
apparently originally consisted of a rectangular plan with gable roof through cornice centered side
dormer and a smaller gable roof dormer to the north of it, both on the east roof plane. Two elements
are of particular interest, one being the three-sided bay (2x8) that has a basement counterpart with full
fenestration, and the left hand entry with its pedimented frame, side lights and transom (both might well
be recent improvements, particularly the bay base given the apparent presence of concrete block on
the basement front), side gable plan with gable roof front offset wing (to right), shed roof dormer on left
of plan, inset corner porch, stone foundation. Back of plan has walkout basement, double decker porch
(6x20). 1950 Sanborn shows two entrances on front. The centered side wing measures 18x22. Front
porch measures 5x22.
Alterations: porch has been recently replaced, original was hipped and enclosed c.1930s, house now
being restored metal porch posts have been replaced with wood posts and balustrade, house is being
painted. Permits note re-roofings in 1934, 1980, 4x12 porch rebuilt 1988.
Landscaping/Setting: narrow raised lot drops abruptly to north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Frank and Viola Parsons lived here in 1899. He was an agent for American
Express (79 Chestnut).
The terraced land between these two streets would have been quite prominent and would have been
protected from direct sunlight given their northern exposure.
John M. Fritz (Engler-Frudden Lumber Co.) lived at 97 Chestnut in 1896, as did E. Howard and Sidney
Smith in 1899,
Building History: John R. Wallis owned the parcel when it was sewered in 1921.
J. J. Nagle offered this seven-room house with hard wood floors for sale in 1922. The house had a
107-foot frontage, steam heat and modern bathroom (Telegraph, June 2, 1922). Addressed as 631-33
in 1971 by Assessor, duplex.
