7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889, Assessor
1895-1905, Queen Anne style (asymmetry, bay, paired brackets, gables), Shingle style (concentric
wood shingle patterning, gable front treatment).
Physical Description: two-story brick rectangular plan (broader on east front, 23’6m 18’6” wide on west
rear end, 42,5’ long) with centered north and south bay wings (three-sided with paired brackets at top of
cutaway, 3’6 to 4’x14’6”), front wing has high gable front roof with oculus window and concentric shingle
work. Gable dormer fronts have infilled apexes, are pedimented (right hand only) and shingles. There
is a raised stone foundation. Twin parallel brick belt courses trace the spring stone levels on both
floors, and the sill level on the upper floor. Windows have unexpected gauged brick jack voussoir
arches. The rear wing has a built in gutter system that results in close cutback eaves lines. East side
gable dormer with geometric infill in the apex, hexagonal shingles. Front porch (22’6x6) is near full
width. Enclosed southwest corner side porch (4x13).
Alterations: a mystery is a Sanborn notation (1909/50) which reads “FR Attic” which normally means
mansard roof. Permits note a re-roofing in 1995, porch repair and new footings 1995.
Landscaping/Setting: located on excavated shelf below street level, first oriented to street to east so is
backwards to Grove Terrace.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: William J. Wodrich owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date) (See 970?).
William F. and Matilda Wodrich lived here (4 South Grove Terrace) as of 1899 (not listed 1896). He
was a traveling salesman. Thomas and Selma Hogan owned the house 1947-55+.
