7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872/1906
(Assessor) (single story cottage, gable front, south wing), pre-1900, vernacular two-story frame gable
front plan. The plan has been re-fronted to the west from the east.
Designer/Builder: Contractor Henry J. Playter is the probable builder, c.1858.
Physical Description: stone foundation, wooden water table, east walkout basement beneath original
left hand entry with transom and sidelights, attic lights, heavy sill/plate, 2/2 windows, pedimented
wooden lintels, twin north side brick in wall chimneys. Rectangular core (38x25) with south wing 12x10,
wrap-around south addition on wing, 24x16.
Alterations: plan reversed from east to west orientation with right hand entry on west wall, a shorter
window set now occupies that spot. Entry now on south side wing. Asbestos siding. Two-story east
porch with extensive ornamental trim work, rounded arches removed. Present west entry is on south
side wing. The current kitchen wing dates to 1888. The second floor became an apartment in 1938
and the original south porch was enclosed. A second sunroom was likely added then. Permits note re-
roofings in 1980 (half), 1995, conversion to two-family unit 1938 ($2,000), rear porch rebuilt 1957
($175), sunroom partly re-roofed 1987, siding, sils, casings, eaves, windows replaced 1990 ($11,000).
Landscaping/Setting: excavated shelf on hillside with west stone retaining walls, fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Henry and Matilda Playter acquired the property on October 30, 1856. The

1857 directory laces them at 11 and Bluff. They remained until July 1864 when it passed to attorney
Thomas McNulty, who quickly sold it a month later to the notorious bank embezzler Richard Babbage.
Babbage never lived here. Babbage sold the property to George and Ellen Burch on September 29,
1870. George W. Andrew became the owner on April 21, 1875. Henry Friederick Christian Schneider
paid $3,500 for the property on May 6, 1890 and he took a mortgage from Andrew, possibly to improve
this property. The mortgage was satisfied in April 1892. Schneider died September 11, 1920. Carl
and Mary K. Lindenberg purchased the property on June 17, 1926. They had previously lived at 1083
Grove Terrace. Carl Lindenberg was an infamous spendthrift and his wife took over the property and
became his guardian in 1930. The property was finally sold to cover his debts in 1935. It was duplexed
in 1938 (property abstract).
H. F. C. Schneider owned the lot in 1898 when the city took bids for 1,500 cubic yard of fill for the lot
(Telegraph, April 21, 1898). He owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date, c.1896).
Building History: single story cottage with same footprint, east orientation and porch, visible in 1889
birds eye view and as two-story frame in 1872 view, with south single story wing. Erma Kolck owns
1917. Bill Ewing and Sara Daines owned and renovated the house as of 1992 (Telegraph-Herald,
September 6, 1992).
