7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1901-02 (Assessor),
Neo Classical style (massing, broad eaves with modillions, returned eaves, centered dormer with
bracketed cornice, porch with centered pedimented gable extension, tapered round columns, narrow
clapboard). Modified Gothic style (pointed rear attic light).
Physical Description: two-story rectangular plan (21’6”x43, rear off center wing 17’6”x22) with hip roof,
centered rear wing, north side exterior chimney, broad overhanging eaves and full-width front porch
(40x8 with 3x14 centered projection). A series of centered elements dominates the façade, these being
the porch extension, a second floor three-sided oriole, and the cupola with half-turret roof. Stone
foundation, wooden water table. Narrow clapboard exterior, tile edging on roof ridges, finials on same,
unusual paired windows set at corners.
Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1940, 1994 (new roof $25,000), windows installed 1941, porch,
fascia, siding and piers repaired 1988 ($4,000).
Landscaping/Setting: high terrace setting, steps to the north, high retaining wall to the west, excavated
rear yard.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: Thomas J. and Eliz. Conlin lived here (14 South Grove Terrace) 1913, 1921, as did
Leo J. Sweeney 1918. Conlin was a partner in Conlin & Kearns. Herbert H. and Frances Hopkins lived
here 1903 (first listing of house), he was the president of the Dubuque Butter & Milk Co. The house
was not listed in 1902.
H. F. C. Schneider owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date, c.1896).
