Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1883-86, Queen Anne style. This is yet another excellent and very well preserved example of an elongated QA design. The point of particular interest is the cornice design in which there is a separate wall cornice beneath the cornice proper. The latter is then framed out much like scaffolding support with modillions and the design even incorporates the gutter into its profile. Note the use of broad siding on this house (original?) Designer/Builder: Frank D. Hyde, architect (he also designed the Greystone and the Hancock House) Physical Description: two-story rectangular frame plan (squarish north core, 31x37 with south wing 23x30) with hip roof core with gable end wings on each north/south end and a broad three-sided bay with a gable roof dormer cap on the northeast corner of the façade. The south wing has a centered exterior chimney, centered pavilion on the gable front, and recessed corner porch on the second floor. The east bay gable front has a bracketed and denticulated cornice and infilled apex above the Palladian -like window set. The gable is pedimented and paired brackets support the gable eaves edges where they project above the cutaway corners below. The same treatment is applied to a gable roof wall dormer on the south side of the façade roof. It is placed above a triple light window set on the second floor. There is a gable roof wall dormer on the east side of the north side wall and there too, a chimney passes through its center and the gable is pedimented. The wrap-around porch (Craftsman style? Oriental/ Occidental?, 54x15) was present by 1909 and replaces a shallow porch that was to the south of the front bay. Walkout basement beneath front porch. The plan contains 14 rooms, 6,400 square feet, four fireplaces, six bedrooms. There is a west end oriole with shingled exterior, an L-rear wing, rear gable roof dormer with shingle exterior and lunette window at its apex. Original clapboard siding. Alterations: porch as noted, the side-gabled rear addition, placed in the northwest rear on its own stone foundation, was present by 1909. The 1897 photo (Souvenir Gems) shows that the porch in front of the front bay has been added, but the rest is likely original or an exact copy. Being repainted. Note spider web lights in gablet. Permits note re-roofings in 1958, 1996 (synth slate roof, $42,000), siding repair 1978. Landscaping/Setting: hillside location, high terrace, stone retaining wall, wire fence, fronts east, stone retaining wall and gate, steps and walk. Rear yard excavated level with high stone retaining wall to west (Highland), wood fence at street level on wall top. Shares gate in front stone wall with 1155 to south, second gate at north end of property. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; William Harrison Day residence (1886), Day was president of the leading Standard Lumber Company.
