Conchar House Dubuque Name of Property County 1295 Grove Terrace Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1889 (Assessor says 1906), Queen Anne style. Physical Description: two-story hip roof core (33.6x47.4) with rear north and south side wings with gable roof dormers. The porch wraps around the plan (24’ south frontage, same to the east) and has an open front wing. The exterior is all wood shingled. A second story porch on the south side has been enclosed. It has large multi-light windows with lunette tops. The dormers have infilled apexes with bracketed cornices set above the windows. The gable fronts are pedimented. There is a shed roof north dormer on the core roof. The porch appears to be original with its trim work and turned posts. Alterations: more research and better photos needed. Permits note re-roofings in 1995, 1999 (porch), canopy 1977, resided (part) soffit repair, 1980, re-sided 1980, windows replaced and relocated 1988 ($600), attached 23x24 frame garage 1989. 1971 Assessors card records old 13x21 frame garage. Landscaping/Setting: corner parcel on hillside, garage in terrace to the north. Stone retaining wall on the north behind the garage. Wall bears remnants of apparently painted street name at corner. Stone retaining walls to east, north and west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; James A. Conchar House, local hardware merchant and owner of a metal plating firm. Original Owner/Builder: James A. Conchar is first listed at 125 South Grove Terrace in 1890. He was then manager of Schreiber & Conchar Mfg. Co. He lived here until 1906. Building History: one of five large houses visible on 1889 birds eye view. Banker Jacob Deming (Judson K. Deming here 1911-18) purchased in 1910 and remodeled. His sister, Kate Keith Van Duzee lived here and is known as the “patron saint” of the arts in Dubuque. She founded the Dubuque Arts Association and the Dubuque Boys Club. The house served as a dormitory for Loras College during the 1950s (1991 Old House Enthusiasts Tour). The sewer tap dates to August 9, 1904. Alfred McDaniel owned the lot in 1874 when it was sub- divided. 9.
