This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1889 (Assessor says
1906), Queen Anne style.
Physical Description: two-story hip roof core (33.6x47.4) with rear north and south side wings with
gable roof dormers. The porch wraps around the plan (24’ south frontage, same to the east) and has
an open front wing. The exterior is all wood shingled. A second story porch on the south side has
been enclosed. It has large multi-light windows with lunette tops. The dormers have infilled apexes

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; James A. Conchar House, local hardware merchant and owner of a metal plating
firm.
Original Owner/Builder: James A. Conchar is first listed at 125 South Grove Terrace in 1890. He was
then manager of Schreiber & Conchar Mfg. Co. He lived here until 1906.
Building History: one of five large houses visible on 1889 birds eye view. Banker Jacob Deming
(Judson K. Deming here 1911-18) purchased in 1910 and remodeled. His sister, Kate Keith Van
Duzee lived here and is known as the “patron saint” of the arts in Dubuque. She founded the Dubuque
Arts Association and the Dubuque Boys Club. The house served as a dormitory for Loras College
during the 1950s (1991 Old House Enthusiasts Tour).
The sewer tap dates to August 9, 1904. Alfred McDaniel owned the lot in 1874 when it was sub-
divided.
