Alphonse Rhomberg House Dubuque Name of Property County 571 Jefferson Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: c.1883-84, Italianate two-story brick side hall plan (brackets, wrap-around lintels, bracketed entry canopy). Physical Description: broad rectangular core (25x32) on raised stone foundation with water table, left hand entry with recessed side panels, double doors, transom and original canopy, singular narrow ornamental wrap-around lintels superimposed on brick window arches (terra cotta, metal?) with spring stones, stone sills, attic light, bracketed (almost modillions) and uniquely denticulated broad cornices. Side wing (11x15’6”), rectangular rear brick wing offset west to west side wall (15x36’6”), centered two- story brick extension (8x12), two rear extensions parallel alley (15x19, northwest corner), 35’6”x19, east wing). Total of 19 rooms as of 1955. Alterations: transformed into apartment complex with two-story rear wing, two-story brick solarium east side wing, and two-story elongated rectangular plan wing across the back of the property. All of these save for the solarium are of early date and feature corbelled brick parapets and brick window arches. Two small front basement windows might be of later date given their wood framing, concrete deck and steps with metal railings. Permits note re-roofings in 1950, 1972, 1977, 1985, 1993 (flat roof), 1995, rear side porch enclosed 1955, deck on side rebuilt 1993. Landscaping/Setting: large parcel, moderate terrace with stone retaining wall, steps, fronts south. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: L. Alphonse Rhomberg. Building History: L. A. Rhomberg owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1894. Five-plex as of 1955. Clarence J. and Augusta Weaver (passenger agent, C&GW Railroad) here 1903-21. Mrs. Mary Rhomberg here 1899-1903. Maggie Rhomberg, widow of Alphonse L., here 1896. L. Alphonse Rhomberg, wholesale liquor dealer, 1884-1890. He was at 531 Main in 1883. Charles Petrakis Apartments (painted on transom) owner as of 1955, sells to Nicholas and Stella Psihoyos 1958. 9.
