7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: c.1899, single-story
brick side gable vernacular duplex with tall centered gable roof through cornice dormer (shingled front.
Physical Description: single-story duplexes are uncommon but this one gains more room from its
walkout basement, and there are twin small side wings and a full-width rear porch, double rowlock brick
window arches, stone sills, paired and centered single entries, end wall chimneys. The stone
foundation steps up to grade at the half way point on the sidewalls, two rear walkout doors with gable
roof hoods. Rectangular plan, 26x36. Assessor’s card 1971 shows rear porch removed.
Alterations: small gable roof porch and posts and concrete deck new, dormer base shingled. Permits
note re-roofings in 1959, 1995, 4x8 wood awning over front porch 1984.
Landscaping/Setting: cottage site is excavated into terrace, fronts north, corner lot.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: not visible on 1889 birds eye view. C. A. Voelker owned the parcel when it was
sewered c.1894. This Voelker link needs to be investigated to determine if this is one of his earlier
spec houses. Tap dates to August 1, 1918.
634 first listed 1899 with E. J. Dornbush (as 84 Jefferson), still there 1918, 636 first listed 1902 with J.
A. Kelly. No Dornbush listing for 1896.
