7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889?/1856+
(Assessor), two-story side gable brick vernacular duplex plan.
Physical Description: rectangular plan (front rectangle, 30x44, rear centered wing 16x32, single-story
centered rear wing, 18x27), small square two-story centered rear wings, raised stone foundation and
water table, symmetrical fenestration, paired centered paired-door entries with dormers, recessed
entries, unusually ornate five-part stone lintels (square spring stones, key stone, side portions with
raised sill), sills have brackets, eaves continue beyond end walls, concrete deck with concrete block
piers on east half, end lights in gable ends. Front porch measures 6x44.
Alterations: no porch as late as 1909, deck with metal railings c.1910 although west half has stone front
under deck, 1950 Sanborn shows porch or deck only on east half, windows replaced. Permits note re-
roofings in 1934 (415), 1958 (part of 415), 1973 (415), 1985 (all), roof repair 1962 (415), soffit and
fascia repairs 1984 ($60,000 including interior work), new 12x4 porch with steps, 2000.
Landscaping/Setting: ground rises to north, fronts south.

Original Owner/Builder: James C. Paine House
Building History: Assessor splits property as of 1971, unified ownership. Robert W. Steward, James C.
th
Paine (at 25 14 in 1890) owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889 and owned it in 1873 when it
was re-platted.
First directory listing for 415/17 is G. M. Healey, 1902, and Thos. H. and Emma Clark (Fraatz & Clark)
for 1896-99. Clark was at 1501 Bluff in 1890.
