7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1876, 1875
(Assessor), two-story brick side gable Italianate residence. Of particular interest are the surviving
rounded upper sash, each one remaining, and the apparently original porch with pedimented entry (with
decorative frieze in the gable front), paired brackets, Eastlake like bargeboard and thin paired columns,
and wooden porch deck.
Physical Description: eaves project beyond end walls, chimneys on end wall peaks, symmetrical
fenestration, raised stone foundation, centered double entry with early doors, same oversized
pedimented lintels as 460 Loras, rear wing offset to east (12’6”x13) and porch (14x10). Rectangular
plan (32’6”x33). Front porch measures 5x20.
Alterations: very well preserved, present porch in place as of 1909. Permits note a re-roofing in 1937.
Landscaping/Setting: excavated level site on hillside, stone retaining wall with cut and stairs. Large
coniferous tree removed from west front since 1986.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: W. H. Peabody built two brick houses on this street in 1876 (Herald, June 15,
th
1876). Given the identical plans, the sewer record link with Peabody for 460 West 14, and the
th
Assessors 1875 date for this property, it is very likely that Peabody built this one and 460 West 14.
Building History: 460 and 464 Loras have nearly identical plans and matching lintels and rear wings.
Poor condition, “not modern” as of 1971.
th
First directory listing is 1896 with Mrs. Mary Wilde, widow of George, 64 West 14. She is here through
1899.
