7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1896-97,
Romanesque (triple dormer lights with stone voussoir arches, gable finial and cap stone, heavy
rusticated round stone lintels on tower), Shingle (turreted corner tower, rounded corner where turret
joins with side wall, shingled tower attic and turret roof, projecting pedimented gable roof side dormer
over second floor oriole).
Physical Description: two-story square plan (30x10), offset front wing, 5x), brick hip roof, eight room
plan with four bedrooms (24x65) high stone foundation with water table (front basement door in base of
tower), corner tower and left-side gabled dormer, hip roof porch (7x15) with broken pediment Neo-
Classical porch (paired round columns on stone piers), single door entry with art glass, original door,
and oval side window to left of tower, rear east side dormer and chimney, triple raised brick parallel belt
courses trace first floor lintel level on tower and east wall, and second floor lintel level on the front.
Dormer window set has elongated stone sill with carved scrolled ends, tower features four-window
band just below its cornice line, wood shingle roof on turret. Rear centered wing (17x17) with side
porch (4x17).
Alterations: enormous concrete retaining walls flank the front basement door, very well preserved.
Permits note re-roofings in 1982, 1999, porch re-roofed 1964, detached frame garage 1979.
Landscaping/Setting: corner lot, ground excavated level, stone retaining walls to east and north, lower
wall to west, front concrete stairs with metal railings, fronts south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Michael S. Hardie, pictured as same in Souvenir Gems of Dubuque, 1897.
Building History: Rebecca J. Farley owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889.
First directory listing is Michael S. Hardie, in 1899 (97 Loras) still here 1921.
