Dubuque Name of Property County 517 Loras Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1872-73, 1886 (Assessor), Italianate? (Palladian-like upper front window pattern). Physical Description: two-story frame rectangular plan (30x23) on raised stone (stuccoed and scored?) foundation, symmetrical fenestration, left side entry, two-story rear wing (14x23) bumps out to east, twin brick chimneys on east side wall. Narrow hip roof full-width front porch (5x21) with turned columns, wooden stairs and rails. Alterations: asbestos siding, window and door reduction, alteration of lower front windows. Permits note roof repair in 1967, new 8x30 two-story frame addition 1999 ($8,500). Permits note re-roofings in 1976, 1994, re-siding 1959, changing of windows, re-siding, door work 1984 ($5,000). Appears to be in the process of restoration, siding has been removed and narrow clapboard exposed, porch has gained a balustrade since 1986. Landscaping/Setting: ground rises to the north, house fronts south, low concrete retaining wall to the west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Building History: likely an earlier side hall plan that was converted given the survival of the porch and turned rails. Duplex as of 1971. John Beam owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889. The earliest directory listing dates to 1873, with John Beam, blacksmith for the ICRR. He is placed on th the north side of W. 14, nine houses west of Bluff. By 1883, still here, he was with the CM&St. Paul thth Railroad. He is last listed 1890 (32 West 14), C. H. Berg, 4 Ward Alderman, was here 1896-99, the house was vacant both in 1918 and 1921. 9.
