7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: c. 1895, Queen Anne
town house design five-plex (shaped and stepped gables, window surrounds, massing, contrasting
materials). This is a rather remarkable design particularly in Dubuque, it has no counterparts and the
designer successfully distinguished the successive frontages by alternating gables, dormers and
window treatments. The end units simply have stone sill level belt courses on the upper floor, the
center unit has only a Palladian attic window set, while the intervening units have rich limestone window
and door surrounds incorporating quoins and voussoir arches.
Physical Description: two-story brick massive block with hip roof, triple gable roof front dormers and one
on the east side wall, all set above shallow brick pavilions. Raised stone foundation and water table
(bright white), flat brick voussoir arches on all fronts save for stone exceptions. The four westernmost
units have left side entries, the east unit has a right hand one and thus there is one paired set. Entries
are recessed but have no transoms. There three openings on each ground floor front and just two
windows on the upper levels. Dormers alternate, with a broad three-sided dormer on the east end
balancing two narrow hip roof dormers on the west end. The outside front dormers have twin round
topped lights, the center a Palladian window set. The east dormer has a single round-topped light.
Basement windows have water table level stone lintels and are aligned with upper level windows. The
hip roof is divided into two halves with an intervening fire wall with raised end wall and stepped front.
The entire plan walks up the hill and the five units are at three different levels. Core rectangular plan
measures 31x84 with three rear wings, separated by lightwells. These measure 31 feet long, and from
east to west, 31’, 16’ and 27’ respectively.
Alterations: concrete stoops and metal railings have rep Permits note re-roofings in1942, 1973, 1980,
1995, fire damage remodel and repair 1999 ($30,000). Three front porches were erased on 1971
Assessors card.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner location, ground rises north and west, building fronts north.
High stone retaining walls to east, south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: ten apartments as of 1971.
M. Amelia Hogdon owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889.
First listed 1899 with five tenants, none of these tenants were present 1896. Earlier house numbers
th
124, 126, 128, 130, 134 West 14 Street.
