7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: c.1897-98, pre-1909,
two-story frame side gable vernacular plan.
Physical Description: left hand entry, stone foundation. Two-story front rectangular core measures
12x27, single-story centered rear frame wing measures 12x24.
Alterations: sided, eaves reduced, windows altered. Stone stoop with metal railing. Permits note re-
roofings in 1993, 1994, new open porch 1948, foundation repair 1971, roof repair 1962, exterior
alterations 1993. Porch removed from 1971 Assessor’s card.
Landscaping/Setting: ground level rises to the west, excavated parcel, sidewalk rises as it crosses lot.
Narrow lot with stone retaining wall to south.

Building History: Mitch/ Michael Cosgrove [lives at 156 West 14, 1890] owned the parcel when it was
sewered c.1889. A 200-pound rock fell from the bluff in front of Mrs. Cosgrove’s kitchen in 1878 (the

house was on the alley between Arlington and 14, Prairie and Dell) (Die Iowa, August 29, 1878).
