7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872, 1872-75,
c.1910, Italianate style modified c.1910. Two historical photographs document both identical fronts
Physical Description: two-story frame (?) hip roof south core and north wing, rectangular plan, raised
stone foundation, symmetrical fenestration on core with centered entry (west), triangular through
cornice dormer over entry dates plan to c.1875, Neo-classical gable roof west entry porch with
oversized round columns, flattened gable ends, northwest rear corner entry with metal canopy, south
end two-story wing with corner entry and cantilevered second story deck and roof. Broad eaves, two
large chimneys on north end of core, two low profile gambrel monitors on north roof. Metal perimeter
fence (new). Rectangular core plan 31x53 with left side bay 6’6”x17, and right hand wing, 24x17,
assemblage of five rear additions, roughly 26x54.
Alterations: first addition was a two-story wing to the northeast. by the early 1870s there was a two-
story frame corner porch/extension in the northwest corner, four massive brick chimneys arose from the
four corners, walkout-small porches were on both fronts and there was an east-facing single story
three-sided bay north of the entrance. Painted brick, windows changed, exterior stuccoed, south wing
added, monitors added, west porch changed. Soffits/frieze completely covered with a vertical
aluminum siding, brackets likely removed. Permits note re-roofings in 1982, 1998, new garage 1973,
soffits, fascia and windows sided 1975, handrail replaced, deck enlarged, attached 10x11 gazebo with
bridge 1987 ($3,000), porch flooring and guardrails replaced 1990, sliding door replaced with two
windows 1997, exterior fire exit 1999.
Landscaping/Setting: massive stone retaining wall to east and south, historic garage likely 560
Jefferson/Wilbur, fronts west, garage to north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; James and Anna Forrester House
Original Owner/Builder: The Herald reported that the mansion was “aglow last evening…illuminated
brilliantly” for a party attended by 100 couples, music provided by the Great Western Band, the
occasion was one of “choice refreshments and the society of the first families” (Herald, July 25, 1876).
Forrester was a dry goods merchant.
Building History: original house clearly visible on both the 1872 and the 1889 birds eye view, in the
latter it appears to front east with landscaped trees on that front. Harry Day. Jr. lives at 25 Olive 1918-
21.
Five family apartment block with indoor pool, three fireplaces, 1971.
James Forester owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889. James Forrester made $500 in
th
improvements to his dwelling on the 12 Street Hill in 1875 (Herald, October 31, 1875).

Forrester first appears in the directory here in 1875, the previous year he boarded at the Lorimer
House. The 1875 listing is as 42 Olive, 1890 Olive and Jefferson, as southeast corner Olive and
Jefferson 1901. As of 1909 they were at 42 West Locust.
