7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1863, 1871
(Assessor), Italianate style (brackets, brickwork, massing).
Designer/Builder: A. Ora Holland is thought to have been the architect given similarities with 1298 Mt.
Pleasant which is known to represent his work.
Physical Description: two-story brick gable roof plan with an irregular footprint. The core is that of a
near square (43x41), oriented east/west with twin south wings and a north frame garage wing (back of
plan, 12x28). The south wing has a two-story square cut bay that has its own bracketed cornice
(6x17’6” with bay 6x11’6”). The gable end has a bracketed and denticulate-ed eavesline. Indicative
perhaps of an early construction date is the use of recessed window panels that are defined by
pilasters and projecting spandrels between the floor levels. There is a raised stone foundation and
water table. The second south wing has a two-story rounded tower-like bay (6x17’6”) that features
singular Craftsman style like lights that are divided into four vertical lights the full height of the double
hung sash. Window arches employ double rowlock courses and are flattened rounded openings, the
arches wrapping around the window from each spring stone base level. There is an elongated frame
screened porch on the south side set between the two wings (present 1950). A square cut wrap
around front porch (36’ east frontage, 24’ north frontage) is on the northeast corner of the plan. *need
to see front of house, not photographed. There is a single story rear brick gable roof wing. A recent
garage and connecting wing runs northwest from the house.
Alterations: rear wing, porches (c.1910). Permits note remodeling in 1973, stairs added on exterior
garage door 1984, chimney rebuilt 1985, garage re-roofed 1940, porches re-roofed 1985, foundation
wall for detached garage and 24x44 garage 1987, brick/frame addition 1992 ($100,000), synthetic slate
roof 1996 ($28,000).
Landscaping/Setting: on very large lot fronting on Walnut, Chestnut and Prairie (east) streets, the lot
level rises to the west and south. Garage to northwest, drive south from garage.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Susan Lawrence had title to the property from 1856 onwards and likely built the
house prior to selling the property to Gideon T. Steward in 1863. Steward was the owner of the Daily
Times newspaper.
Building History: directories locate Steward “on the bluff” and “on McDaniel’s Hill” 1863-68. Additions
date to 1880, 1899, 1900, 1904, and 1910. James Wallis bought the house in 1880 as a wedding gift
for his son John W. Wallis and wife Mary Burtin Wallis. They owned it until 1947. Paula and Roger
Stenlund purchased and restored the house (2003 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour; Telegraph-
Herald, September 27, 1985).

The Telegraph-Herald (Decem-ber 31, 1905) reports that a Mr. Wallace had built a double frame
house, opposite that of Alderman D. Jones, for $3,000. Jones was at 219 Alta Vista, but the only
Wallace entry found is for John R. Wallis, 121 Prairie?
Daniel Reardon built a 2.5-story brick residence on Prairie for $3,000 in 1870 (Herald, December 18,
1870). 1209 and 1295 Prairie are the only candidates. Directories do not place him here so it must
have been a speculative house.
Visible on both 1872 and 1889 birds eye views, the former appears to depict a rectangular plan that
fronts east, the latter an L-plan with combination gable (east wing) and hip roof (south wing). The latter
also depicts a raised front stair approach to the second story level.
Mary B. Wallace owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889.
Directories place J. Rider Wallis here in 1921, list 121 Prairie as vacant 1918, and list Mrs. Mary B.
Wallis (widow John W.) here 1896-99, and John and Mary Wallis, 1886-1890. The family is at 96
Chestnut 1873-83, and Jas. R. Wallis remained there in 1886. They were on Chestnut, south side, two
houses west of High in 1873 and are not listed 1868.
