7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: c.1897-98, Classical
Revival style (massing and side gable form, exposed rafter tails, symmetrical fayade massing and
fenestration), Gothic Revival (decorative hoods on the front dormer and above two west side windows).
The ecclesiastical feel apparent in this design deserves investigation. The unique porch capitals
consist of solid stepped out forms that are of undetermined stylistic influence.
Physical Description: two-story frame rectangular plan (32x30, centered rear wing 16x31 '6") with
steeply pitched side gable roof and broad eaves. There is an east end chimney with corbelled cap.
The fayade is symmetrically arranged with a shallow three-sided centered bay (2x8), a gable roof
through cornice dormer and flanking small hip roof dormers. The central dormer actually has a double
cornice line, with an unusual jerkinhead like roof arrangement. Exposed rafter tails project on all of the
cornices and there are larger base brackets at the cornice bases. The hip roof porch (7
6"x27) is full-width with front and side entrances. The square posts are paneled. There is a ground
level oriole on the west end (2x14) and a door set between the floor levels has a walkway to the street
to the west. There is a 1.5-story rear wing and attached garage. The latter is curiously angled 45
degrees to allow access from the street. Half-sized windows beneath the eaves appear to be a
vernacular throwback. The rear dormer mimics that on the fayade. There is a recessed side porch on
the west wall of the rear wing (an inset southeast corner porch measures 1 Ox31 '6").
Alterations: aluminum siding has greatly detracted from the original appearance. Permits note re-
roofings in 1941, 1973, conversion of single family dwelling tomulti-family 1952 ($2,000), re-siding
1976.
Landscaping/Setting: corner parcel has a front terrace but is below grade relative to the street to the
west with the ground rising to the south. Rear drive.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Frederick A. Rumpf House
Building History: W. P. Large owned this parcel when it was sewered and when it was re-platted in
1873. The sewer tap dates to c.1914. Assessor notes 1955 "formerly two owners" was then first floor
dwelling and three apartments upstairs.
Pictured in Souvenir Gems, 1897. In 1902 Rumpf built a new house on Grove Terrace using architect
Thomas Carkeek (Telegraph-Herald, April 6, 1902). Directory confirms Rumpf as here in 1899,
followed by James Ryan in 1918 and Moses Martin as of 1921.
Rumpf lived at Hill and Walnut in 1871 when he improved his residence, and directories place him at
154 Walnut (Tribune, December 21, 1871). He again made improvements ($300) in 1876 (Herald,
December 2, 1876) and was at the same address.
