7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1925, Spanish/Mission
style (tile roof, stucco exterior, ornate entry surround, window insert surround, balcony, casement
windows).
Designer/Builder: Karl F. Saam, architect (Dubuque)
Physical Description: two-story elongated L-plan (28x57 with 3x26 front pavilion), tile with stucco
cladding, side gable red tile roof, entry is south of center on the east side wall, an ornate cast surround
caps the entry, this is balanced with a metal bracketed balcony with two walkout doors on the second
floor to the south. The east side wing has a gable roof dormer and there is an ornate attic light insert.
Windows are casements.
Alterations: Permits note the construction of a large garden cabin in 1934, erecting a two-story 37x27
stucco addition with full basement, erect 16x16 porch on rear all in 2000 ($200,000). Substantially
enlarged to the north post-1986.
Landscaping/Setting: oriented with south end wall to the street, design entrance is actually east to an
alleyway, large corner parcel with long terrace approach from the east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Martha E. and Mary McDonald House (Assessor identifies as original owners,
own till 1970, original cost $35,000).
Building History: William E. and Barbara O'Rourke purchased in 1970. Kevin and Mary Kane are the
5th owners and restored the landscaping to the south of the house (1996 Old House Enthusiasts House
Tour). The house was pictured in the Telegraph-Herald (May 22, 1932) as an example of exemplary
landscaping. The "Misses McDonald" then resided here.
John Bell owned this parcel when it was sewered and in 1873 when it was replatted. Lot 8 was broken
off of his original holding.
Martha E. McDonald lived here 1927-48 (Biays Bowerman research).
