7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1896, Classical
Revival style (gambrel roof dormer, Palladian window in same, lunette and oculus windows on side
gable ends, and porch with paired and triple round column supports).
Designer/Builder: W. F. Giulburt, architect (owners have blueprints).
Physical Description: the apparently large front massing (rectangular core 30x24) hides the presence of
a narrow elongated rear two-story wing (23x32'6") (plan very similar to 542 West 11th). The west
pavilion measures 3x24, a bay 2'6"x13. East side bays (1'6"x5), orioles and pavilion (4'6"x14) combine
to make the whole look larger and the elevated placement on a raised stone foundation adds to this
effect. The core house is squarish and has a high pitched side gable roof. A large gambrel roof
through cornice dormer is centered on the fayade and features a Palliadian window set). Eaves project
broadly on the fayade but are closely trimmed back on the side walls. The house retains its narrow
clapboard cladding. A wraparound hip roof porch (east end 8x18, north front portion 30x8'6") covers
the fayade and the northern third of the east side wall. In lieu of the expected centered entrance, this
one is placed on the east end pavilion front and there is a singular second Palladian-like window set on
the ground floor front (west side). The porch has high stone piers. It retains its wooden railings and
balustrades and has a plain cornice. On the east side wall there is a three-sided oriole at the stairway
landing. On the rear wing there is a full-height east bay (7x14) with steeple like cap. There is a single-
story rear extension with east side porch (18x14'6").
Alterations: some apparent window replacements on the upper floor, otherwise very well preserved.
Permits note front step replacement in 1982, screening in a covered porch in 1988, replace wood
shingles on gable ends 1998, repair and replace porch posts, replace wood steps and footings 2000.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner terrace location, fronts north, ground rises to the west and
south, front terrace approach. There are stone retaining walls to the east and south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Adolph and Emma Luesch House
Building History: W. P. Large owned this parcel when it was sewered. Samuel and Helene Auld own
1968-73.
Julien's Journal (6:3: 1 0) terms this Queen Anne Chateauesque style, the house interior features nine
types of wood trim, the house had combination gas/electric fixtures due to the builder's distrust of
electrical power. The house is first listed in directories in 1901. Adolph Luesch last listed 1909, Emma
Luesch here 1911, Edward F. and Henrietta R. Wood here 1913-68 (widow after 1945) (Biays
Bowerman research).
