7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1875, Second Empire
style (Mansard, paired brackets, dormers, bay). Italianate style (elongated windows particularly floor
length lower front windows).
Designer/Builder: Ora Holland, architect.
Physical Description: two-story squarish L-plan (rectangular core measures 36x38, front wing 7x14)
with south wing on left side of fayade, two-story brick (offset west, 22x24) and a rear porch measures
10x20. Inset northeast corner porch measures 6x10, front porch measures 6x23. Raised stone
foundation and water table. Original narrow porch infills lower front to the east of the front wing, retains
original posts, capitals and trimwork as well as a bracketed and denticulated cornice. Lintels are
apparently two-part, with a flush set rounded arch and attached square spring stones being paired with
a matching rounded projecting cap with flattened ends. A single-story square cut bay (4J6JJx10) ,
paneled with detailing matching that on the porch, covers the lower front of the front wing. Dormers
have rounded hoods. One shed roof dormer has been added on the front wing. There are two dormers
on each side wall. Side fenestration is minimal, being restricted to two centered openings on each
level. The mansard is a true mansard with concave profile and double cornices. Basement windows
have separate stone lintels apart from the water table.
Alterations: window replacement, added dormer. Side wall basement windows have been sealed up.
Permits note re-roofings in 1983, 1995 (part), sides of mansard, soffit and trimming of windows 1996,
remodel 1972. Rear porches rebuilt 1973 (Assessor)
Landscaping/Setting: terrace setting, ground rises to the west and drops to the east, fronts south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; John Bell residence.
Original Owner/Builder: this is described as "one of the most elegant residences in the city, both in the
way of architecture and magnificence of localities... one of the most commanding sites in the city... two
story brick with mansard... square, substantial and imposing, Epworth stone trimmings cut by Joe Roy,
brickwork by _ Woods... 32x43 with kitchen wing, two stories, 22x24, "it is probably the largest
dwelling as well as the most expensive, that has been erected in Dubuque during the present year,JJ
$15,000, also a two-story frame barn, 22x34 (Herald, October 31, 1875).
Located on the knoll of the hill at 11th Street, afforded a superb view, was 'substantial, massive... makes
a really attractive appearance and adorns the hill.JJ Side buildings under construction as house was
built (Die Iowa, November 18, 1875).
Building History: As of 1955 owner lived on ground floor and there were five apartments, three
upstairs, third floor also rented. John 1. and Mary Lamey purchased 1948 and converted partly into

John Bell owned the lot and Lot 8 to the east when it was sub-divided, he lived here 1875-81, no listing
1882-99, Dr. Allen J. Staples here 1899-1911 (Biays Bowerman research).
