7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: c.1897-98, modified
Gothic style? Need to determine what original plan was.
Physical Description: single-story frame side gable (27'6x29) cottage with raised steeply pitched cross
gable roof dormer (the dormer actually rises above the main roof ridge), and flanking gable roof
dormers. These retain shingle cladding. Rear shed roof porch sided on east end and open to
southwest(29x6) .
Alterations: presume a square plan with centered front entrance, gained the dormers and an extension
c.1895-1900. Re-sided, aluminum siding and some vertical siding on lower part of west front. Permits
note re-roofings in 1939, 1977 (part), 1964, re-side 1968 (alum), soffits 1981.
Landscaping/Setting: terrace setting, ground drops to south, fronts north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Edward Werner
Building History: 1950 Sanborn appears to show a squarer plan, has this one been lengthened? Key
question, was cross dormer on side or centered? Cottage appears to be on 1889 bird's eye view.
Lewis H. Wood owned this parcel when it was sewered.
Edward Werner was the first listing, 1899 (232 West 11th) and remained until 1902 (Biays Bowerman
research).
