7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: c.1897-98, Classical
Revival (rounded dormer front window sets, twin front gable roof dormers with broken pediments and
massive bracket supports).
Physical Description: 1950 Sanborn labels west side a dwelling, east side a flat and shows L-shaped
front porch, broader on east end, across east two-thirds of the frontage. Two-story frame hip roof
rectangular plan (44x30) with paired centered entrances. Fayade fenestration is unusual in that larger
single flanking outer windows on the ground level are centered beneath two upper level windows.
Raised stone foundation with basement windows on front (short, added?) and full sized windows and
doors on the other fronts (full sized west side basement windows are 15 feet above grade!). The front
foundation wall is of stone while the sidewalls are frame below the front grade level. Rear porch (24x5)
is open underneath and enclosed on the ground floor. Original front porch measured 20x6.
Alterations: asbestos siding, metal porch canopy and posts replace original. Permits note re-roofings in
1938, 1996, re-side gable ends 1978. Porch replaced 1960.
Landscaping/Setting: house on foundation set well below street level, ground drops away to south and
west, fronts north.

Original Owner/Builder: Charles Thill
Chas. Thill owned this parcel when it was sewered. Lester and Edith Delaney owned 6561945-61+.
Earl and May Ruh owned 662 pre-1955-62+.
Arthur B. Carlin, merchant at 254 West 11th 1870, no listings found for 254-56 1880-1902, Charles Thill
listed at 2561899-1909, Mrs. Mary Thill 1911-29, Mrs. Fannie Westphal at 254 in 1902, no listing 1903-
05, Mrs. Catherine Rider there 1906-18 (Biays Bowerman research).
