7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: c.1873, pre-1872,
Italianate style (paired brackets, rounded attic light, slightly rounded frame window hoods with sills, bay,
elongated ground level windows, side hall plan with left hand entry, transom and sidelights).
Physical Description: two-story frame gable front L-plan (square core 22x28, 1.5-story rear wing with
basement 16x14, single story frame rear wing 16x8) rear porchenclosed, single-story three-sided bay
(3x7) entered on east side wall. .
Alterations: asbestos siding, concrete stoop and metal railings, full-width front porch present 1950
removed. Permits note re-roofings in 1961, 1973, 1994, re-siding 1943. East side entry on rear wing
closed off and moved to east end of rear porch.
Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, fronts south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Owen and Teresa M. Conway
Building History: Mordecai Mobley purchased two lots from Alfred McDaniel in 1855 but died prior to
developing them. Henry Hetherington obtained the land in 1865 and replatted it in 1869 with equal-
sized lots which failed to agree with the McDaniel boundaries. Owen Conway purchased this lot on
November 10, 1873 and the parcel was mortgaged for $1,500 onl September 24, 1878, same satisfied
in 1884.
Owen and Teresa M. Conway lived here 1874-75. No listing 1878. George W. Walton, candy maker
her 1880. George W. Healey, hardware merchant here 1881. George 1. Lyon was here 1901-04.
Lewis Van Patten was here 1906-11. Wilfred and Geraldine Andresen own 1939-60, then the famous
Biays and Lois Bowerman, noted local historian, owned it until 1980 (Bowerman, "683 West Eleventh
Street...A History...," 1980).
