7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1915, Craftsman style
porch (battered upper paneled posts), broad eaves). See well-preserved garage of same period.
Physical Description: two-story frame hip roof rectangular plan (20x30 core, with two-story front porch,
stone foundation. House at 694 across the street has the same new cladding. Two-story rear wing
offset east, single-story rear wing (20x12), north of that with porch in northwest corner (27x12 total).
West bay measures 2x9.
Alterations: painted faux asphalt stone cladding and infilling of front porches have apparently removed
side windows and render the whole unintelligible. Permits note re-roofings in 1980, 1997, repair front
steps 1942, re-side 1956, enclose rear side porch, two replacement windows. Single-story frame
(masonite) addition 1971, rear porch removed. Stucco exterior as of 1955.
Landscaping/Setting: corner lot, fronts south, garage at north end fronts to alley.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: F. B. Johnson is the first listed occupant, 1915. Joseph J. Janwerth followed,
1916-18. Charles Lorenz was here 1923-42 (Bowerman).
Building History: The McDaniel's Estate owned this parcel when it was sewered. Cornelia Delaney
owns 1945-1954, and substantially remodels over four-year period ending 1955.
Ephraim and Jane James likely occupied an earlier house on this parcel, 1870-87. There is no listing
1888-97. Henry A. Schunk here 1899-1906, Frank A. Streitler, 1908-09, F. B. Johnson 1915, Joseph
Jungwork 1916-18 (Biays Bowerman, research).
