7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872, pre-1875, Italianate
style (form, bracketed eaves and canopy, and locally unusual elongated lower level front windows).
Designer/Builder:
Physical Description: two-story brick square plan with side gable roof, broad bracketed eaves, side hall
plan, entry with transom and sidelights set to left of front, ornate hip roof bracketed entry canopy,
double rowlock brick window arches and stone sills, attic light on south wall.
Alterations: two-car concrete underground garage/deck to south of house, entry on terrace front, deck
behind house, otherwise very well preserved. Permit for re-siding, 1908, $6,139. Permits note re-
roofing in 1969, remodeled 1973, re-sided including windows and door casings 1980 (all 961), re-roofed
(963) 1989.
Landscaping/Setting: concrete retaining wall, elevated parcel, ground rises to west, abuts building to
north, garage to south.

Special Significance; Platt Smith residence
Original Owner/Builder:
Building History: Mrs. Platt Smith owned parcels 9-10, Lot 655 as of October 1889 when the block was
sewered, and Mr. Smith improved an existing dwelling at this address in 1875 (John Bell contractor,
$500) (Herald, October 31, 1875).
1883-1899 Janet E. B. Smith widow of Platt.
1875-1882 Platt Smith, capitalist and attorney at law and attorney for Iowa Pacific Railroad.
