7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1895, Classical Revival (porch
massing, square pillars, diamond lights in attic and porch windows).
Physical Description: Smaller two-story brick residential plan with hip roof, front gable roof wing and
double decker front porch. Rough surface brick is used to form two broad belt course bands at the
lintel levels of each floor, these are incorporated into rounded jack voussior arches on the front
windows. The same brick infills the top of the gable end. The gable end light is special with twin
rectangular lights, plain stone lintel and sill, with a tapered rounded column separating the lights. The
upper level of the porch is clad with very narrow clapboard, with a defined base, sill level moulding,
four-window band, and a frieze/cornice. The lower porch is open. A very special feature is the splayed
gable front with a denticulated treatment set above a carved frieze base.
Alterations: very well preserved. No permit data.
Landscaping/Setting: level lot, library to north, house fronts west and is advanced nearly to the
sidewalk.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; T. J. Quinlan was a conductor for the Illinois Central Railroad.
Original Owner/Builder: Conductor John Looby added a front porch, rear addition and a fence to his
house at this address in 1878 (Herald, April 13, 1878). T. J. Quinlan made $500 in improvements at
this address in 1881 (Herald, December 14, 1881). He was then treasurer and business manager for
the Telegraph. In 1895 Quinlan demolished “a good house to build a better one,” this one being of
brick construction with an eight-foot setback, “a neat and cozy residence,” by early August it was being
rushed to completion, the plasterers and lathers being at work. It was then called a cottage (Herald,
June 4, August 2, 1895).
Building History: Thomas J. Quinlan owned the parcel when the block was sewered. The tap date is
1889
1890-1899 directories list T. J. Quinlan at this address.
