7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: post-1891, pre-1909, Queen
Anne (angled bay, round wrap-around porch), Craftsman (modified eaves).
Physical Description: two-story square brick plan with angled square-cut bay/tower in southeast corner,
round wrap-around porch with square columns on northeast corner, segmental stone lintels with
flattened ends, plain stone sills, stone foundation, rear wing and single story side wing to south pre-date
1909.
Alterations: eaves extended, roof replaced. No permit data.
Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, house fronts east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Charles Schreiber employed John McCloy to build a two-story brick residence,

18x34, for $2,000 on Bluff between 11 and 12 streets in 1872-clearly this is not that building (Herald,
thth
November 24, 1872). John M Ballou bought a house on Bluff between 11 and 12 streets and
completely overhauled it, inside and out in 1877. He purchased it from John Maclay (Herald, August
10, 1877). Ballou was a United States Attorney.
Building History: Charles Schneiber owned the parcel when it was first sewered.
1867-1911 Charles Schreiber at this address.
