7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872? pre-1884, site
sheet says Greek Revival (returned eaves, gable front), side hall gable front vernacular brick house.
Physical Description: short rectangular plan, entry to left, bulls eye window on north side wall, two-story
rear addition (subordinated to core), recent hip roof single-story north wing. Broad plain stone lintels,
stone sills. Square-cut hip roof porch.
Alterations: metal posts on porch, side addition. Permits note re-roofing in 1941, 1972, 1994, repairs
1941, enclosing of side porch 1955, construct stoop 1959, side addition 1964 ($2,300), rear addition
1969 ($5,700), soffit, fascia and gutter work 1984, fire damage repair in apartment, fire doors, 1998
($10,000).
Landscaping/Setting: unusual survival of less developed residential lot with open ground to north of
house.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Otto Schmitz did the same in 1910 (Herald, January 1, 1911). Michael Liddy, a
drover, built a $6,000 brick house at 1408 Iowa in 1883 (Herald, December 20, 1883) and a double
frame dwelling, same cost, a year later-the last two have no addresses, the brick appears to be this one
given his ownership of this lot when the block was sewered, he resided at 1408 Iowa at the time.
Building History: Michael Liddy owned the parcel when it was first sewered. The tap dates to April 18,
1904.
