7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1888, Queen Anne style
residence, denoted by asymmetry of plan, roof, wings and bays, mixed cladding materials.
Physical Description: squarish two-story frame plan with shallow T-footprint, raised stone foundation,
hip roof with central chimney, two-story wings with gabled roof tops to west (cutaway corners, paired
brackets at the top of each angle, 45-degree southwest angled square cut bay, and a broader south
wing. The second floor bay fronts, spandrels and gable ends are wood shingled, while the exterior is
otherwise clad with narrow clapboard. Each gable opening is infilled with a half-round cutout
bargeboard effect. There are small gable roof dormers flanking the angled corner, fronting west and
south. The hip roof front porch has squared pillars atop brick piers and has a pedimented entryway
(c.1910).
Alterations: porch as noted, window replacement. No permits found, 305 had a permit for re-siding a
frame doctor’s office 1957 ($2,590).
Landscaping/Setting: large triangular parcel, house located at northeast corner of same with deep
setback, fronts south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Clarence J. Lesure residence, he was president of Lesure Lumber Company as of
1893.
Original Owner/Builder: frame residence, built for $4,500 in 1888 (Herald, December 23, 1888). Lesure
owned the parcel when it was first sewered so he is the probable builder.
A second candidate is Peter Keine, Jr. who lived at 15 West Locust as of 1899, he announced plans in
mid-1896 to “put up an elegant modern residence in the near future” for $7,500 (Herald, May 24, 1896).
Building History: appears on 1889 birds eye view and 1891 Sanborn map. Henry Kenline lived at 15
West Locust as of 1918-21.
The Jackson Park Walking Tour links Civil War veteran, Peter Kiene, Jr. as a later resident. Kiene
helped found Finley Hospital, was a bank director and president of the Board of Education. The house
was later known as the Kenline House. P. Kiene resided here as of 1899.
